Having built a substantial lead on the bike, Brauer could cruise the run

Brauer began carefully, 16th from the water and down two minutes on the swim leaders. Wayne Ellis of Lake Cathie won the swim leg in 24:22 from Mona Vale's Roger Casey. Heading out of Forster for one lap of the Ironman bike leg, Brauer unleashed a powerful push to take the overall race lead. Brauer maintained a fast pace on the run, though his lead on the bike had allowed him to back off, relatively speaking, and to cruise home comfortably,

Jarrod's bike leg time of 2:15:10 was five minutes faster than second fastest bike leg rider, Victorian triathlete Andrew Cameron from East Brighton (2:20:23). Third fastest rider was Chris Cook from Picnic Point in Sydney with Jason Shortis shadowing the fast age groupers and fourth quickest on the bike.

Out on the run, it was a case of who could hunt Brauer down, but that was not about to happen. Shortis unleashed a demon run split of 1:17:27, the fastest half marathon on the day by near four minutes. And who was the second fastest runner? Jarrod Brauer, of course.

The professional triathletes had to settle for second and third places overall. Brauer's 'senior' training partner Jason Shortis raced to second place after his awesome half marathon time, finishing in 4:07:07.

Sydney's Grant Webster was the third fastest runner and third overall in 4:14:27. For Webster the race was both triumph and tragedy. This was his first major race on turning full time pro and he had hoped for a better result. However he has been full time for only a matter of a couple of months, coming back after nearly 15 months out of the sport. So Webster’s wasn’t really a bad effort and Grant is definitely one athlete the stars will be watching out for come the Ironman distance in April.
